Why the smell comes back after a car wash

- Cabin air filter replacement and HVAC treatment. The filter is saturated with smoke and re-scents every breath of air. It is replaced, then the system runs on recirculate with a treatment fogged through the intake.
- Ozone or chlorine dioxide treatment. With the cabin sealed, ozone oxidizes the odor molecules left in foam and trim. This is done last, after the source is removed; used first, it just masks.
- Glass, inside. The film on interior glass is nicotine. Cleaning it removes the last reservoir and the haze that smokers' cars always have.
