What a hand wash does that a tunnel wash cannot
Three things happen on our hand wash that no tunnel is built to do, and each one is visible while we work. First, the iron remover: sprayed on a car that has only seen tunnel washes, it turns purple within a minute on the lower doors and behind the wheels, which is brake dust that has embedded in the clear coat and will not rinse off. Second, the clay bar: run a fingertip over the hood after a normal wash and it feels gritty; after clay it feels like glass, because the bonded film of pollen, sap and road fallout is gone. Third, drying: Baton Rouge tap water is hard enough to leave spots if a car air-dries, so we blow the panels and trim dry before the sealant goes on. The two-bucket method with grit guards is what makes all of this safe; lifted dirt stays in the rinse bucket instead of going back onto the paint.
